We love welcoming people from all walks of life to enjoy the historic nature of the site but their are still a few areas that are difficult to access for people with a disability.
Please read through the following information and if you have any questions feel free to reach out to discuss accessibility of the site further.
Maitland Gaol provides two designated car parks for people with a disability. Please note that relevant permits must be displayed and car parks are available on a first come, first served basis.
To enter the building please follow the footpath from the car park around the building heading towards the large green gates. When you arrive at the large green gates you will see a small green gate on the right hand side, please enter here and use the ramp to access the building. The door will be unlocked, however if you have difficulties please knock or ring the door bell and a staff member will be able to assist.
The site is generally accessible for visitors with wheelchairs and other mobility aids, with assistance. While ramps are available into most buildings, they may not be at fully compliant gradients and assistance may be required. Some areas are accessed through doorways which are too narrow for modern mobility aids. Access is not available to floors above ground level other than in the Chapel. A special audio tour map is available to provide directions around those areas where access is restricted.
When you arrive at the gaol feel free to ask staff for the accessible audio tour map, this will help you navigate the site or download the map here.
The Maitland Gaol Revealed self guided audio tour is available for the deaf and hearing impaired in Auslan / Captions. You can access the Auslan tour by downloading the Maitland Gaol app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Please make sure you bring your own device with the app downloaded and ready to go. Please have your device fully charged to make sure that you can enjoy the entirety of the tour. Depending on individual requirements you may like to bring a larger device, e.g. a tablet, to make the experience more enjoyable.
Service and assistance dogs are permitted access to the site under all circumstances. Service and assistance dogs should be wearing their nominated harness to identify them as an assistance dog. This is to ensure that staff and other visitors are aware the assistance dog is working and is not a pet, therefore the appropriate behaviour should be adhered to.
Please note that therapy and other companion animals may not be permitted depending on individual site requirements.
Maitland Gaol happily accepts companion cards on our self guided audio tours, guided tours and events managed by Maitland Gaol. The Companion Card must be presented at time of ticket purchase, or if purchased online brought with you on the day.
Please note: events held at Maitland Gaol by external providers will have their own rules around the use of Companion Cards.
There are a number of bathrooms available throughout the site that assist with disabled access. All of these bathrooms are labelled on the map provided when you enter the site. Please note depending on individual circumstances that additional assistance may still be required.
