Justice Precinct Guided Tour
Explore the area surrounding Maitland Gaol giving context to the centre for justice in East Maitland.
The guided tours are offered with reduced numbers per tour so they can be delivered under social distancing guidelines for the enjoyment of all our visitors.
To assist in maintaining social distancing the night tours will no longer be offered by torchlight. Instead lighting will be turned on inside the site to enhance visibility.
All Guided Tours must be pre-booked.
Already toured Maitland Gaol and always wondered what all those buildings are that surround it? This tour is your opportunity to find out.
Offered occasionally as a public tour the Justice Precinct explores the land and buildings external to the Gaol wall. The tour includes information about East Maitland Courthouse, which is still operating, the Mounted Police Barracks and the many locations of East Maitland Police Station. It also points out areas worked and maintained by the prisoners outside the walls, including the grounds surrounding the courthouse and the vegetable gardens once tendered by prisoners for food production in the Gaol.
This unique 90 minute walking tour examines the importance of the Justice Precinct to the prosperity of East Maitland and gives further information about the importance of Maitland Gaol to the region.
