Filming

Are you looking for a unique location for filming in the Hunter Region? Maitland Gaol is about as unique as they come.

Filming

Maitland Gaol is one of the only intact regional 19th and 20th century Correctional Institution available for location filming within New South Wales. 

Originally opened in 1848, this classic sandstone walled maximum security facility was constructed almost continuously during its 150 years as a correctional institution, the last building being completed in 1993. Built on almost two hectares of land on the hill overlooking the township of East Maitland, the variety of structures within the facility makes it a unique location. 

Maitland Gaol offers the following features suitable for filming:

  • 19th century and contemporary cells
  • Razor wire
  • Visiting facilities
  • Industrial workshops
  • Exercise yards
  • Shower room
  • Kitchen
  • Guard towers and catwalk
  • Hospital

Photography

Visitors are welcomed and encouraged to take still photographs and videos of Maitland Gaol to later enjoy their personal memories of their time on the inside. However, images should not be taken of members of the public without their express permission, and out of courtesy we request you check with your tour guide before taking their photograph. Video imagery must not exceed 10% of the total period of any tour.

Any images taken may not be used or published in any form including but not exclusively newspaper, magazine or websites without the express prior approval of Maitland City Council. 

Commercial photography permits can be arranged by contacting Screen Hunter on (02) 4978 4014 or by contacting the site directly on (02) 4936 6482. Please note permits take time to arrange and a decision will not be made on the day of the enquiry.

Drones

For the safety and preservation of our heritage buildings, wildlife and visitors recreational use of 'drones' are not permitted in Maitland Gaol.

The commercial use of a 'drone' may be considered and permits can be arranged by contacting Screen Hunter on (02) 4978 4014, or the site directly on (02) 4936 6482. Please note permits take time to arrange and a decision will not be made on the day of enquiry.
