Are you looking for a unique location for filming in the Hunter Region? Maitland Gaol is about as unique as they come.

Maitland Gaol is one of the only intact regional 19th and 20th century Correctional Institution available for location filming within New South Wales.

Originally opened in 1848, this classic sandstone walled maximum security facility was constructed almost continuously during its 150 years as a correctional institution, the last building being completed in 1993. Built on almost two hectares of land on the hill overlooking the township of East Maitland, the variety of structures within the facility makes it a unique location.

Maitland Gaol offers the following features suitable for filming:

  • Visiting facilities
  • Industrial workshops
  • Exercise yards
  • Shower room
  • Kitchen
  • Guard towers and catwalk
  • Hospital

Maitland Gaol has been the location for shooting television shows, short films, documentaries, feature films, online and streaming content.

The unique combination of 1800s stone cell blocks, more modern cells from the late 1990s as well as external cell blocks and yards can offer a wide range of location options.

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to take photographs and videos of Maitland Gaol for personal memories and personal use. As a courtesy please try to avoid including other members of the public in your shots and we request that you check with your tour guide prior to taking their photograph. Video taken as part of a guided or self guided audio tour should not exceed 10% of the total tour time. 

We love seeing your images uploaded to your Facebook and Instagram pages when you tag us with #MaitlandGaol. However, commercial use of photographs is prohibited unless approved in writing by Maitland Gaol. Similarly, commercial use of video taken at the Gaol, including uploading content to public facing YouTube or TikTok channels, is prohibited unless approved in writing by Maitland Gaol. Any images taken may not be used or published in any form including but not exclusively newspaper, magazine or websites without the express prior approval of Maitland City Council.

For the safety and preservation of our heritage buildings, wildlife and visitors recreational use of ‘drones’ are not permitted in Maitland Gaol.

The commercial use of a ‘drone’ may be considered and permits can be arranged by contacting Screen Hunter on 02 4978 4014, or the site directly on 02 4936 6482. Please note permits take time to arrange and a decision will not be made on the day of enquiry.
