Maitland Gaol in the spotlight as night tours return
Due to overwhelming popularity last year, the self guided night tours at Maitland Gaol will return for limited dates on 12 May, 9 June and 14 July in 2017.
As part of the first ‘Maitland Gaol Under Lights’ event on Friday 12 May, the facility will also host food truck Gourmet BBQ and the popular Hi-Top Coffee van from 5.30pm, who will offer visitors a special boost of energy before they get started on their tour. The Gaol will officially open for the event between 6.00pm and 9.30pm (last entry at 8.30pm).
Maitland Gaol Coordinator Gordon Sauber says, ‘Opening the Gaol at night last year proved to be a huge success and we had great participation from the community.
‘The self guided audio tours are interesting, informative and lots of fun, and running them at night really provides an interesting new perspective for our visitors to enjoy.’
Visitors have a choice between three different self guided tours, each providing a different perspective of what life behind bars was like. They include:
- Maitland Gaol Revealed - gives an in depth understanding of how prisoners slept, ate, exercised and whittled away the many hours until their release.
- Escaping Maitland Gaol - is all about revealing the details of the many escape attempts seen throughout the Gaol's 150 year history.
- Snitch’s Gaol Exploration - is a children’s tour narrated by ‘Snitch the rat', a ghostly character who leads children on an adventure through the gaol cells.
