Overview
Maitland Gaol is one of NSW’s premier heritage listed sites. It attracts visitors from across the nation to learn about the 150 years of inmate history, spanning from settlers and female prisoners in the 1840s to mass murderers and white collar criminals in the 1990s.
The vision for Maitland Gaol is to be ‘an iconic tourism destination, driven by it’s unique heritage, connection to community, and innovative experiences’. This will be supported by a series of strategies including:
A sustainable business model
Conservation and interpretation
Balanced commercial and community use
Creation of a vibrant precinct
Partnerships to support experiences and products
The Maitland Gaol Development Plan and associated Site Master Plan and Plan of Management provides a comprehensive guide for the future development and management of the Maitland Gaol site.
With the recent announcement of over $10M in funding from both the NSW State and Federal Governments, we are now moving forward on delivering over $11.6M in initiatives including capital investment in boutique accommodation, a new activity hub, innovative interpretation and provision of event infrastructure. This is on top of works already underway to provide a high quality Guard Tower Experience as outlined in the Development Plan.
