Welcome to Maitland Gaol
Unlock the gates of Maitland Gaol today, where visitors are invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes. A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol housed some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals and has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years.
Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998 before reopening in 2001 as a tourist attraction. The Gaol still remains genuine to the day the gates closed in 1998.
Maitland Gaol provides experiences for individuals, groups and schools that are tailored to both children and adults. There are many fascinating tours available. Be led around by an ex-warder, join a historic tour to learn more about the Gaol's past or simply take the time to do it yourself with a self guided tour. Self guided audio tours are available seven days a week and guided tour times and dates are varied.
