These summer holidays Maitland Gaol has a full range of activities for the whole family. 

Daily tours available
Self guided audio tours are available daily, with adults at children’s prices during the school holidays. There are also a number of guided tours available. 
 
Paint Your Place
For 150 years, many prisoners called Maitland Gaol home. During this special school holiday activity, be guided on a one hour mini tour and learn about the different buildings, industries the prisoners worked in and what their daily routine consisted of. At the end of the tour, children are encouraged to paint their interpretation of the 'place' many prisoners called home.

Detainee Drill
Ever wondered what the prisoners of yesteryear spent their time doing? Find out on this filled mini tour and detainee drill activity. After checking the prisoners accommodation for 1 hour children will have the opportunity to learn and perform the exercise routine undertaken by prisoners in the early 1900s to keep fit. Sure to bring some laughs this tour gives a small glimpse into the interesting lives of the prisoners of Maitland Gaol at the turn of the century.

Midweek Escapes Torchlight Tour
Escapes from Maitland Gaol cover a vast period of the facilities history. The earliest years were a time ripe for escape with security features basically comprising of the towering walls. As the years progressed and the type of prisoner changed the escapes became more daring and dangerous. Whatever the prisoners motivation for escape, the determination and skill they show achieving their outcome is sure to amaze. Hear about a number of the most daring escapes on this torchlight tour lasting 90 minutes. It gives visitors a glimpse into the desperation felt by prisoners and the risks they took to break free.

150 Years Under Lock & Key Tour
Immerse yourself in the history of Maitland Gaol on this 90 minute tour, discovering stories of all sorts of heroes and villains. Our expert guides are regularly undertaking and updating research to give you the most informed tour of this 150 year old institution. Delve into all parts of the site and learn of the changes that have occurred in prisoner treatment throughout the life of this oldest continuously operating correctional facility in Australia.

Ex-Warder Guided Tour
A 90 minute escorted tour through the site from the perspective of those responsible for operating the facility. Be warned, there are some stories which are not for the faint hearted. Your guide will provide you with information on the history of this maximum security facility and what it was like to look after some of the "worst of the worst". Be prepared for some harrowing tales.

Escapes Guided Tour
A 90 minute tour that has been specially designed and explores the various stories behind some of the documented escapes from Australia's longest continually operating correctional facility, Maitland Gaol. The stories of amazing escapes from the unbelievable and amazing to the ludicrous will amaze you. The guide will escort you around the site, delving into the ways prisoners were treated through the various eras of prison management, and how the Gaol was developed through its 150 operational history. Learn about the 'Magnificent Seven' which was the last successful escape in September 1977 and Patrick McNamara, who escaped in August 1851, only to be recaptured four months later.
