These winter school holidays Maitland Gaol has a full range of activities for the whole family, and is the perfect place to escape the rainy weather.

Self guided audio tours are available daily, with adults at children’s prices during the school holidays. There are also a number of guided tours available.
In the spirit of fun, a beanbag cinema will be set up in the Gaol's Auditorium. The cinema is a great way of staying out of the cold winter winds and gives you the opportunity to watch some classic children's films at a great family friendly price. During the winter months there will be two family friendly films with popcorn and maltesers available for purchase. Why not enjoy a movie behind bars these school holidays.

Come along to Maitland Gaol these school holidays and enjoy a mini tour and the opportunity to make your very own peg doll. Making peg dolls is an activity from the past and was popular amongst children in the 19th century when they had to entertain themselves with whatever materials they could find. It will also give children the opportunity to learn about all sorts of prison uniforms over the ages. There will be four designs to choose from including a prisoner, turnkey, governor and matron.

While learning about the history and operation of this notorious prison, this tour explores the various stories behind some of the documented escapes from Australia’s longest continuously operating correctional facility. Throughout your exploration, stories of amazing escapes, from the unbelievable and amazing to the farcical. All, in most cases, for a few hours of freedom. Learn about the 'Magnificent Seven' the last successful escape in September 1977 and Patrick McNamara, who escaped in August 1851, only to be recaptured four months later and face the hangman’s noose in March 1852.

150 Years Under Lock & Key Tour
Immerse yourself in the history of Maitland Gaol on this 1½ tour, discovering stories of all sorts of heroes and villains. Our expert guides are regularly undertaking and updating research to give you the most informed tour of this 150 year old institution. Delve into all parts of the site and learn of the changes that have occurred in prisoner treatment throughout the life of this oldest continuously operating correctional facility in Australia.
