Gaol Jam has some new flavours

On the back of the success of Gaol Jam, Mulberry last year, Maitland Gaol has again teamed up with East Maitland CWA to produce some new lemon inspired products. Available on the shelves now is Two Fruits Marmalade and Lemon and Ginger Jam.

All products are made with fruit from the Maitland Gaol garden. Stock is limited, so get in quick if you're after something fresh and tasty for your toast this winter.

The jam is part of a larger project to research and share stories about the role that food and gardening played in life behind bars. Kitchen gardens formed an important part of life at Maitland Gaol. Prisoners helped to grow and prepare the food that sustained the inmate population.

Gaol staff, with the help of a team from Work for the Dole, have also recreated a kitchen garden inside the grounds, planting a wide range of vegetables and herbs. The produce from these plants will be harvested and new varieties of jam, chutneys and butter’s made available.
