"Maitland Gaol Unlocked"

The new Maitland Gaol Museum in the Auditorium

With the cooperation of the Maitland Mercury, Maitland Gaol is presenting a fortnightly column entitled "Maitland Gaol Unlocked". The column is presenting stories about various items on exhibition in the new Museum and/or from the Maitland Gaol Collection which is an ever increasing array of artefacts and items associated with Maitland Gaol: its people and its buildings.

The Maitland Gaol Collection is being assembled through generous donation by people who have had some association with the site or from their family and friends. Cataloguing of the collection and research into items is being coordinated by Maitland Gaol staff and undertaken by volunteers who have an interest in the history of Maitland, Maitland Gaol and gaols in general. This work is being coordinated from the recently developed Research and Reading Room.

Each fortnight, a copy of the current article, together with the photo published on the Monday will be added to our blog page. Members of the public are invited to comment on the item and its story and provide details which may be unknown about the item. Over time, a collection of stories about the Gaol will be built up.
