Welcome to Maitland Gaol

The cell doors have now been swung open, with visitors invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes.

A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998.

Maitland Gaol supports Work for the Dole program

Maitland Gaol has been a host location for a range of Work for the Dole activities for more than eight years.

Two new projects under the Government’s recently instigated Jobactive initiative’s program of Work for the Dole have commenced at Maitland Gaol, improving the visitor experience and assisting the ongoing maintenance of this historic facility.

Accessible signed and captioned self guided tours

The Maitland Gaol Revealed audio tour is available for the deaf and hearing impaired in either Auslan/Captions or Audio/Captions versions at Maitland Gaol. This audio tour is also available using a smartphone app called OpenAccess Tours that can be downloaded from the Apple App store in advance.
