Unlock the gates of Maitland Gaol today, where visitors are invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes. A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol housed some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals and has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years.
On the 29 January 1998 Maitland Gaol closed its gates to New South Wales prisoners for the last time. To commemorate this occasion a series of activities are planned throughout December 2017, January and February 2018.
For the past decade California based Australian photographer Brett Leigh Dicks has been photographing abandoned prisons around the world. In conjunction with his upcoming exhibition, Behind These Walls which depicts decommissioned Australian prisons and gaols, on Saturday 9 December Brett Dicks will lead a full day photography workshop at Maitland Gaol.
Following on from the success of the Ghost Hunting 101 tour, Maitland Gaol is excited to announce the latest addition to our tour portfolio, Advanced Ghost Hunting, which will offer participants up to four hours to scour the site in search of paranormal activity.
