Welcome to Maitland Gaol

The cell doors have now been swung open, with visitors invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes.

A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998.

Visiting Maitland Gaol

Visitors to Maitland Gaol can experience the site by a self guided audio tour or one of the five themed public tours. The self guided audio tours are available seven days a week during opening hours, and public guided tours are readily available on the weekends at 11.00am.

The tours take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Bookings are essential for public guided tours. Click here to book now.

Now and Then Exhibition

Now and Then is a new exhibition that will showcase a series of historic photographs. The exhibition will run from the September school holidays until the end of November. The historic photographs will be shown against a backdrop of recent photographs taken from the same location. It’s a great opportunity for visitors to catch a glimpse into the past of Maitland Gaol and spot some of the many differences between the two photographs.
